Anthropic!
Thariq

Just now, the core author of Claude Code officially left Anthropic!
Thariq Shihipar is the core soul of the Claude Code team, revered by the developer community as the “King of Explanation.”
He posted a lengthy farewell letter on X.
In just 45 minutes, the two most prominent members of the Claude team resigned one after another.
What exactly happened?
“After joining Claude Code for over a year and witnessing its scale grow far beyond what I ever imagined, I left Anthropic.”
In the opening of his farewell letter, Thariq wrote:
Having been the driving force behind Claude Code’s evolution from a controversial new tool to the “default coding method for countless developers,” he chose to leave at the height of his influence.
He then laid out the core value of the entire letter: “Compete upward.”
I truly love working at Anthropic and deeply share the company’s mission. Most importantly, I firmly believe in the concept of ‘upward competition.’ If we work hard and responsibly, we can raise industry standards and inspire others toward better outcomes. If we can all push each other to improve, things become incredibly wonderful. I will always move forward with this spirit.
In today’s frenzied race of large models, Thariq is like a refreshing stream. In his view, the AI competition is not a zero‑sum game, but a venture to raise humanity’s standards and compel each other to become more outstanding.
Regarding his colleagues, he offered praise—
“My colleagues at Anthropic are the most talented, thoughtful, capable, and sincere people I have ever met in my life. I’m glad they are at the helm now, and I trust them deeply.”
At the end of the letter, he handed the spotlight back to the team, tagging several core Anthropic developers in one go, urging everyone to keep following them.
Although the farewell letter was very formal, Thariq still posted a standout comment in the comment section: “Wait, am I the only one who thinks Opus 5.5 has become stupid?”
Thariq’s résumé looks like it’s been cheat‑coded.
He’s not just a traditional researcher; he’s a “hexagonal warrior” spanning academia, top tech giants, and the Silicon Valley venture‑capital scene.
Even during his undergraduate studies in engineering science at the University of Toronto, he demonstrated a strong product intuition, co‑founding the aggregated notification plugin Chime, which was acquired directly by HubSpot in 2013.
He then pursued further studies at the tech geek’s dream destination—the MIT Media Lab—where he served as a research scientist.
There, he co‑led the development of PubPub, an interactive academic publishing platform that disrupts traditional PDFs, aiming to reshape how human knowledge is presented using dynamic programming.
Subsequently, armed with a deep understanding of complex interactions, Thariq plunged into the startup track.
He founded the browser‑based game creation platform One More Multiverse, not only successfully entering the world‑leading accelerator YC, but also scaling the platform to a user base of over a million.
Inspired by tabletop RPGs and Roblox, this product secured more than $17 million in funding.
By 2025, after a fellowship focused on AI interpretability research, this CEO chose to join Anthropic as a “technician.”
It is clear that every step Thariq takes addresses the same core problem: how to turn an extremely complex system into an outstanding experience that ordinary people can understand at a glance and start using immediately.
This dual perspective of a “game CEO” and an “MIT scholar” made him, after joining the Claude Code team, keenly notice the current blind spot in AI development—stop obsessing over blindly adding compute to models; what needs to be reshaped is the interaction between humans and AI.
As a former YC star entrepreneur and researcher at MIT Media Lab, Thariq leveraged his strong product intuition to revamp Claude Code.
Previously, he expressed the following views.
Fact One: Large models already have “excessive” intelligence, and compute power is no longer the primary bottleneck
Thariq sharply pointed out: today’s strong models (such as Opus 5) are already very smart, and the real bottleneck is not raw compute power but the interaction interface and human comprehension!
Capability redundancy refers to the tasks a model can accomplish when equipped with an appropriate agent runtime framework (Harness), granted environment access and code execution abilities, which far exceed what it can demonstrate using only ordinary conversation without external tool support.
Truth #2: In the era of powerful models, boldly cut 80% of the prompts!
In internal experiments, the Thariq team directlycut more than 80% of the system prompts from the strong model, and found that the coding ability did not drop at all!

He argues: over‑constraining actually limits the performance of stronger models. Turn rules into on‑demand, modular “Skills” and give the AI room to be creative.
Fact #3: Say Goodbye to Markdown, HTML Is the Future of High‑Density Interaction
Programmers’ beloved Markdown is becoming a barrier to human‑AI collaboration. As AI‑generated code and plans grow longer, people often suffer from reading fatigue and end up “blindly clicking agree.”
Thariq asserts that interactive HTML pages with charts, color‑coded differences, and other visual cues are the only way to keep humans truly discerning in the future.
Fact #4: Humanity’s Ultimate Future Job – the “Compute Resource Allocator”
Don’t worry if AI writes code faster than you.
In the future, your role will become a “Compute Resource Allocator.” Your core value lies in deciding which direction to invest expensive agent compute power, and using proactive questioning tools (such as AskUserQuestion) at critical points to eliminate blind spots, constantly keeping the wheel in your hands.
Perhaps Thariq Shihipar has already found the direction of “upward competition” and is ready for the next entrepreneurial venture?
